Cool Stuff No.2

Hey fellow music classmates! Today's article will be about some more cool stuff that I wanted to know about and then share it with you guys.

For the first cool thing, I wanted to tell you guys something about their culture and style. From our previous classes and videos that we have watched together, I noticed that every single person is dressed in very vibrant colors; I wanted to know why. I am not going to lie, I actually like their choice of style and the colors they choose to wear. I think they are very unique and beautiful. After some searches, I found something about what each color represents. The first color, which is black, represents anger and darkness, as well as an absence of energy, and also represents death. White also represents a death as well, and get this, only widows are allowed to wear this color. The next color, which is one of the most popular colors is red. Red represents purity and initiates fear. It is the preferred color for brides, mainly because it signifies prosperity and fertility. Not only that, but it represents positive energy. The last two colors are blue and green. Blue represents new beginnings and happiness. Green represents nature. I ended up finding that all pretty cool and fascinating and I hope you guys will too. Here is an example of the clothing and vibrant colors.

Next, after listening to some of the Andean music and seeing all of the instruments, I became curious as to how the instruments were made. The uena is the oldest known musical instrument in the continent and back then was made out of either clay, stone, or bones. Today, they are made out of bamboo or wood. The bomba was made out of a hollow tree trunk and then covered in animal skin, which was typically skin from a llama or sheep on the top, and then skin from a cow on the bottom. Pretty neat if you ask me. This is the one that grosses me out the most though, the chullus, or chajchas. It was usually made from the dried hooves of a goat and then tied them together with a ribbon, but they can also be made from seashells, seeds, hard wood, or stones and beads. Another cool thing I learned about them is that when they are played, the sound is supposed to resemble wind and rain. Here is a video from a guy who bought a chullus, hope you enjoy:)))

Furthermore, after learning about the andean's music and instruments, I wanted to know out of all the instruments, which one was considered the most important. After doing some digging and searching, I found that the bomba is actually the most important mainly because it sets the overall tempo of the tune than in other instruments. I also learned that is about the creativity and interactions between the dancers, musicians, and singers.

I just always thought it was a colorful culture but now that I know that all of the colors have meaning, that adds a whole new layer! I also didn't know what I expected when looking at the Chullus but props to them for being resourceful.

  3. Thank you for teaching us about the colors. I have always wondered what they meant and I thought that it was interesting how white was associated with death and blue was associated with new beginnings. I also thought it was really cool to learn about how they made the Chullus.

  4. While reading about your blog, I never really paid attention to the colors that they wear. I liked that you did research on that, and decided to explain what some of the colors mean. Personally. my favorite color that you mentioned is blue and green because it represents new beginnings and happiness. I feel like in our culture, if we were to interpret those colors, blue would mean more of a sadness than a new beginning, so I really enjoyed that part. The shaker is definitely unique, and it sounds really cool. It does not just sound like one shaker, it kind of sounds like multiple.
